Career Readiness
When I graduated from
high school I had no idea what I wanted to do
with my life. Like most teenagers I just wanted to live and
have
fun. After losing my father to cancer I decided I would try
to further my education by attending Ball State University.
I soon realized I was not ready for the college life and
decided to enter the workforce. For the next four years I
still had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Then in
1986 I applied to the Marion Police Department and was hired
as a patrol officer. Finally, I had a career and although I
did little to prepare myself for this new challenge, I
decided wherever life would lead me in the future -- I would be
ready. During my twenty-three years in law enforcement I have had
the privilege to work in nearly every aspect of the job.
From a uniform patrol officer, a detective, a staff officer,
and now the Deputy Chief of Police. With each new job I have
dedicated myself to learn and prepared myself for the next
step in my career. Now as I near the end of what has been
an amazing learning experience, I am preparing myself for the
next step in my career. I have learned so many
valuable lessons in my life, however, one of the most
important is to always do your best to be prepared for what
the future may hold.
