Social Responsibility
There is a famous quote
in the Bible, after Cain had killed his brother Abel, God
said to Cain "Where is your brother Abel?" Cain replied
"I
don't
know, am I my brother's keeper?" Well the answer is yes, we
as individuals are our brothers keeper. Many of us are blessed with good
health or healthy bank accounts. There is not a better
feeling in the world than to know you made a difference in a
persons life -- that in someway you were able to help. I have
tried to involve myself in the community in which I work and
live. From volunteering my time coaching a baseball team at
the Police Athletic League to working at the local rescue
mission. However, one of my most gratifying moments came
in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina devastated the gulf coast
community of Slidell, Louisiana. The City of Marion adopted
Slidell as its sister city, and within days of the storm a
team of officers from the Marion Police Department traveled to
Slidell to assist their officers and the citizens of
Slidell. I was very fortunate to lead one of the four teams
that made the trip to Louisiana. The pictures that were shown
on the evening news did not come close to showing the extent
of damage caused by this storm. I will never forget what I
saw there, nor will I ever forget the feeling I had knowing
I helped make a difference. |
